Exploring Luke
January
16/17, 2004
Dr. Lyle VanderBroek, Presenter
Student Pastor Kathie Jackson, Responder
Course Description:
This course, open to both lay people and pastors, will explore the
Gospel of Luke and its relevance for the modern church. Special
attention will be given to both the historical/theological situation
that prompted the writing of the gospel and key theological themes
that aid in the interpretation of specific passages. Luke will be
discussed as a whole, but the class will focus on passages that are
assigned for Lent and Holy Week of Cycle C, our current lectionary
readings.
Suggested Reading:
Besides a Bible (New Revised Standard Version or Revised Standard
Version are suggested) participants are urged to read either Keith
F. Nickle's Preaching the Gospel of Luke (Westminster/John
Knox) or Mark Allen Powell's What are they saying about Luke? (Paulist
Press) before the session. Both volumes are helpful and readable:
Nickle's work is more of a preacher's commentary on the Gospel, but
certainly useful for all Christians; Powell's little book is a quick
overview of scholarly issues and key themes in Luke. The class will
employ some lecture but will strongly emphasize learner
participation.
